Perimenopause can leave you wondering why your body suddenly feels different. Changes in energy, sleep, weight, mood, cravings, body composition, and your menstrual cycle can be frustrating and overwhelming. At Holistic Nutrition Nut, I take a personalized functional nutrition approach to help you better understand these changes and create practical nutrition and lifestyle strategies that support your health through this transition.
Perimenopause is the transition leading up to menopause. During this stage, estrogen and progesterone levels can fluctuate, which may lead to changes in your menstrual cycle and a wide range of symptoms. Perimenopause often begins in the 40s, although the timing, symptoms, and duration can vary significantly from woman to woman.
Every woman experiences perimenopause differently. Some women have mild symptoms, while others notice significant changes that affect everyday life. Common symptoms may include:
If symptoms are interfering with your quality of life or you are experiencing unusual or concerning changes, it is important to discuss them with your healthcare provider.
At Holistic Nutrition Nut, I take a personalized functional nutrition approach to perimenopause. Rather than simply telling you to eat less, exercise more, or follow another restrictive diet, I look at the bigger picture, including your nutrition, metabolic health, hormones, sleep, stress, gut health, activity level, body composition, and other factors that may be influencing how you feel.
I’m Ana Coyle, MS, RDN, FMCP, a registered dietitian and Functional Medicine Certified Practitioner. I combine evidence-based nutrition with functional medicine principles to help you create a plan that supports your changing nutritional and metabolic needs.
Your personalized plan may include:
My goal is not to give you another temporary diet. It is to help you nourish your changing body, preserve muscle, support metabolic, bone, and cardiovascular health, and build sustainable habits that support you through perimenopause and beyond.
Whether you prefer an in-person 1:1 appointment or virtual support, you can choose the level of guidance that works best for you, including an individual session, a 1-month package, or a 3-month package.
Nutrition support can complement the care you receive from your physician, gynecologist, or other healthcare professional. Medical evaluation may also be appropriate for symptoms that require diagnosis, hormone therapy, medication, or other medical treatment.

Nutrition cannot stop perimenopause, but personalized nutrition and lifestyle strategies can support your health during this transition. Adequate protein, balanced meals, fiber-rich foods, healthy fats, quality carbohydrates, hydration, and attention to overall nutrient intake may help support energy, metabolic health, muscle, bone health, and overall well-being.
Changes in estrogen and other hormones can affect where fat is stored, while changes in muscle mass, sleep, stress, activity level, appetite, and insulin sensitivity may also influence weight and body composition.
Rather than simply focusing on eating less, I look at protein intake, food quality, meal patterns, resistance training, sleep, metabolic health, and other individual factors that may be contributing to these changes.
There is no single perfect perimenopause diet. A personalized approach may focus on adequate protein, fiber-rich foods, healthy fats, quality carbohydrates, and nutrient-dense whole foods that support muscle, bone, metabolic, and cardiovascular health.
Your individual needs may vary based on your symptoms, health history, activity level, food preferences, and metabolic health.
Not necessarily. Hormone levels can fluctuate significantly during perimenopause, so a single blood test may not provide the full picture or explain all your symptoms. However, for some women, more comprehensive functional testing may provide additional insight into hormone patterns and metabolism beyond traditional blood testing. When appropriate, I may also evaluate nutrient status, thyroid function, blood sugar regulation, and other metabolic factors that may influence how you feel during this transition. Testing is individualized based on your symptoms, health history, and goals.
Not everyone needs supplements. When appropriate, targeted supplements may be considered based on your diet, symptoms, health history, medications, laboratory findings, and individual needs. Supplements are used to complement, not replace, a strong nutrition and lifestyle foundation.
