Gut Disorders

Gut problems can affect much more than digestion. Bloating, constipation, diarrhea, abdominal discomfort, food sensitivities, and changes in bowel habits can leave you frustrated and unsure of what to eat. At Holistic Nutrition Nut, I take a personalized functional nutrition approach to help you better understand your symptoms and identify nutrition and lifestyle factors that may be affecting your gut health.

What Is a Gut Disorder?

A gut disorder is a broad term used to describe conditions that affect the gastrointestinal system, including the stomach and intestines. Digestive disorders can include issues such as irritable bowel syndrome, small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO), intestinal methanogen overgrowth (IMO), reflux, constipation, diarrhea, and other gastrointestinal conditions. Symptoms and underlying causes can vary from person to person.

Symptoms of Gut Disorders

Gut symptoms can look different for everyone. Some common symptoms associated with digestive disorders include:

  • Bloating and abdominal discomfort
  • Constipation
  • Diarrhea or loose stools
  • Gas and excessive belching
  • Heartburn or reflux
  • Nausea
  • Feeling overly full after eating
  • Changes in bowel habits
  • Abdominal cramping
  • Unexplained changes in weight
  • Fatigue or low energy

Persistent or concerning digestive symptoms should be evaluated by an appropriate healthcare professional. Nutrition support can work alongside medical care to address dietary and lifestyle factors that may influence digestive health and overall wellness

How I Support Gut Health Through Nutrition

At Holistic Nutrition Nut, I take a personalized functional nutrition approach to digestive health. Rather than simply giving you a list of foods to avoid, I look at the bigger picture, including your symptoms, eating patterns, bowel habits, food tolerance, stress, sleep, medications, nutrient status, and other factors that may be affecting digestion.

I’m Ana Coyle, MS, RDN, FMCP, a registered dietitian and Functional Medicine Certified Practitioner. I combine evidence-based nutrition with functional medicine principles to help identify patterns that may be contributing to digestive symptoms and guide a more personalized plan.

Your personalized plan may include:

  • Personalized nutrition coaching: I help you develop practical eating strategies based on your symptoms, health history, food preferences, and lifestyle.
  • Digestive support: I look at factors such as meal timing, food tolerance, fiber balance, hydration, gut motility, and other patterns that may influence digestion and bowel regularity.
  • Therapeutic diets when appropriate: A targeted diet may sometimes be used temporarily based on your symptoms and needs. The goal is to use the least restrictive approach necessary and expand the diet when possible while maintaining adequate nutrition.
  • Functional laboratory review: When appropriate, testing may provide additional information about digestion, absorption, gut bacteria, inflammation, nutrient status, or other factors that can help guide a more personalized nutrition plan.
  • Lifestyle recommendations: Stress, sleep, movement, hydration, and daily habits can all influence digestive health and may be incorporated into your plan.
  • Nutritional supplements: When appropriate, targeted supplements may be used to support digestion, nutrient status, or other areas identified in your plan.
  • Progress monitoring: I adjust your nutrition strategy as your symptoms, laboratory findings, health information, and goals change.

Whether you need focused support or ongoing accountability, you can choose from an individual session, a 1-month package, or a 3-month package. Appointments are available virtually or in person, giving you flexibility to receive support in a way that works for you.

Nutrition counseling can complement the care you receive from your physician, gastroenterologist, or other healthcare professional. If your symptoms require medical evaluation, diagnosis, or treatment, I may recommend working with the appropriate member of your healthcare team.

The goal is not simply to manage a list of symptoms. It is to help you better understand your digestive patterns, improve food tolerance and nutritional adequacy, and create sustainable habits that support long-term gut health and quality of life.

FAQs About Gut Disorders

Nutrition can play an important role in digestive health. Personalized dietary changes can address foods, eating patterns, and lifestyle factors that may be contributing to digestive symptoms. Your nutrition plan should be based on your individual needs rather than a one-size-fits-all approach.

Yes. Bloating and constipation can have many possible contributors, including eating patterns, food tolerance, hydration, fiber balance, gut motility, stress, medications, and other digestive factors. I look at the overall pattern rather than assuming the solution is simply to eat more fiber. When appropriate, additional testing may also help identify factors that can guide a more targeted nutrition plan.

Not everyone needs functional gut testing. In some cases, your symptoms, health history, and response to nutrition changes may provide enough information to guide your plan. When symptoms are persistent, complex, or not improving as expected, testing may provide additional information about digestion, absorption, gut bacteria, inflammation, or other factors that can help guide a more personalized nutrition approach.

No. Holistic Nutrition Nut provides nutrition support and does not replace medical diagnosis or treatment. If your symptoms require medical evaluation, you should work with your physician or another appropriate healthcare provider. Nutrition coaching can complement your existing medical care.

Not necessarily. I do not recommend restrictive diets without a clear reason. However, a therapeutic diet may sometimes be used temporarily when it is appropriate for your symptoms or health concerns. The goal is to use the least restrictive approach needed, monitor how you respond, and expand your diet when possible while maintaining adequate nutrition and supporting long-term gut health.
